FLIP THE SCRIPT

BOOK DESIGN

Farewell partnered with author Christian Acker to create "Flip the Script", an encyclopedic reference of North American graffiti handstyles, aka ‘tags’—the most prevalent and reviled iteration of the art form. As a compendium, "Flip the Script" traces the origins, evolution and migrations of tags while presenting them as the last true form of refined penmanship.

Farewell developed the overall aesthetic of the book, which incorporated a flexible grid to accommodate a wide variety of content. Taking cues from classic Speedball calligraphy and penmanship manuals the layouts to highlighted the importance of letterform as a graffiti fundamental. This included presenting individual writer’s alphabets for a contextual look at style development and regional differences throughout the history of graffiti.
